Support for Families and Motherhood in Russia: Existing Measures, a Seamless Assistance System, and the Role of Public Initiatives

  • Family health and the health of future generations
Today, family and motherhood are a central focus in Russia’s demographic policy. However, increasing the birth rate and strengthening the institution of the family are impossible without comprehensive measures spanning medical, social, and educational policies that cover the entire course of family life. The medical aspect of support begins with the preservation of reproductive health: prevention and early detection of reproductive disorders, clinical monitoring, pre-abortion counseling, infertility treatment, and access to assisted reproductive technologies. The continuity of medical and social care at all stages – from pregnancy planning and maintenance to postpartum support for mothers and children – is of crucial importance. Beyond medical assistance, family well-being also depends directly on the environment children are raised in and the psychological and emotional state of family members, especially women, who often combine motherhood, a career, and the role of caretaker. Families facing difficulties, including families with members in the special military operation (SMO), require special attention; the wives and mothers in these families need a unified system of medical, psychological, and social support. What tools for supporting families and promoting family values have already proven effective in Russian regions? How can we build a seamless support system spanning everything from pregnancy maintenance to the full social integration of large families without leaving behind families with members in the SMO? What role can women’s communities and educational initiatives play in fostering a culture of responsible parenting and supporting the psychological and emotional well-being of women and families as a whole?
